The Importance of Developing Strategic Alliances as a Small Business OwnerDeveloping strong strategic alliances with other small business owners in your field can make or break your company when you are first starting out. Finding and allying with companies that offer products or services that work well or compliment the products or services that your company offers can be a great way to enter into a strategic alliance that will benefit both your company and the other company. Establishing good alliances, particularly with companies that have an established reputation in the industry can help your company to make a name for itself and become known as a reliable and established entity. Keep in mind that business relationships, or any relationships for that matter, don't happen in a vacuum. Any type of strategic alliance that you want to enter into as a small business owner will take work and finesse. Keep these things in mind when you are starting out in trying to establish strategic alliances with other small businesses.
- Look for companies that will be colleagues and not competitors. Companies to engage in alliances with will offer products that compliment the products that your company offers, or will offer services that compliment your products or services. Reach out to companies that it makes sense to partner with instead of trying to force a relationship where there isn't a natural connection between your products or services.
- Go where the companies are going that you want to establish relationships with. Consider trade shows, seminars, trainings, classes, online groups, online chat rooms or forums, or other places that business owners will congregate to be your field.
- Create balanced relationships with the companies that you ally yourself with. Any healthy relationship involves give and take, and business relationships and alliances are no different. If you don't have a lot of assets when you are first starting out, offer something that will be useful to the other company, such as product testimonials or reviews that they can post on their website.
